Update for January 2024

The Governments of Canada and Ontario have completed their internal approval processes regarding the Settlement Agreement. This means that we are moving forward with getting signatures from all parties on the Settlement Agreement.

What comes next?

  • The Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund (RHTLF) Trustees sign the Agreement first, followed by Ontario and then Canada.
  • he RHTLF Trustees met on January 3, 2024, and signed the Settlement Agreement.
  • The signed Agreement will next be delivered to Ontario, to be signed by the Minister of Indigenous Affairs.
  • Ontario will transmit the signed Agreement to Canada, to be signed by the Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations.

All of these steps are anticipated to be completed in the near future.

For your information, the Settlement Agreement can now be viewed on the members only portals of the RHT First Nations websites. The Settlement Agreement remains privileged and condential and should not be shared with anyone other than the RHT First Nations members & beneciaries.

More information regarding distribution of funds will be shared with communities once the settlement agreement is nalized. Meanwhile, your Chief and Council will continue to hold local engagement sessions to provide information and make decisions on fund disbursement at a local level.
